Slating

Since our company was formed traditional slating has been the backbone of our business. Although methods and materials have changed over the years we have been able to invest time and training so that all of our tradesman remain fully qualified to work with a wide range of both traditional and modern roofing materials.

All our staff are fully trained in slating and tiling and regularly carry out re-roofing work using natural slate materials from all over the world.

We often receive calls from people who have recently had a new natural slate roof installed by another contractor but are unhappy with the results. The skills required to lay natural slate differs greatly from those required to lay cement fibre or other manmade slates and many natural slate projects fail simply because the roofers are not experienced in laying natural materials. Unfortunately in some cases the only course of action is to remove the existing slating and start again.

As well as natural sized slates, i.e. slates that are of a uniform width and length, our staff often work with random natural slate materials such as Westmoreland, Burlington, Delabole and Yorkshire or Derbyshire stone. Due to their random length and width these materials require advanced skills in order to be laid correctly.

Because of the rising costs of producing natural slate the use of manmade slate such as cement fibre or reconstituted slate has become more common. Although these types of slates appear to be a cost effective alternative to their natural counterparts, careful consideration should be made as to their suitability for the property.
